The Flemish Science Policy Council (VRWB) played a pioneering role in launching technology foresights in Flanders and as a result is now one of Flanders' leading centres of expertise in the field of foresight studies. In late 2006, it brought together all relevant players to agree on six strategic technology clusters.
Working with Flanders' Chamber of Commerce an Industry (Voka), industry federations and knowledge institutions, the VRWB further expanded these six clusters, taking into account the scientific and technological excellence and the economic potential present in Flanders. This led, initially, to the formulation of one or more specific spearhead initiatieves for each cluster, capable of initiating breakthroughs in theirrespective fields. At a later stage, a feasibility study will be carried out to gauge the level of underlying support and the viability of each of these spearheads. The ultimate aim is to produce a business plan for each viable initiative.
